particularly zealous in its enforcement of the law.

on the African continent. EZRA is a factional tale inspired by the Sierra
Leonean conflict. It is centred on one event: a drug fuelled atrocious
attack on a village by rebel soldiers. The jigsaw puzzle of what occurred
that night is reconstructed through the testimonies of three witnesses:

STRIKE
Director: Volker Schlöndorff
Cast: Katharina Thalbach, Dominique Horwitz, Andrzej Chyra
Germany - Poland / 2006 / 35 mm / color / 1h44
Can a single person change the course of history? Hardly. Such legends
are born at a later time. But a single person can be the catalyst for
a powerful development. Named after Sergey Eisenstein’s 1924 Stachka
/ Strike, about the story of workers during Czarist rule and inspired
from Anna Walentynowicz, the overlooked hero of the creation of the Polish “Solidarnosc”,
this is a solidarity saga set in Poland, based on historical events,
that continues the politically engaged filmmaking of German master Volker
Schloendorff. The film tells the story of Agnieszka, a small woman, but
a loyal and dedicated worker. She is able to forge her way past the fat
cats and masters, but eventually they get her and she is fired on a false
pretence. Showing their solidarity, her colleagues strike in order to
force her reinstatement. Suddenly the whole shipyard is striking, and
then all Polish factories. “Solidarnosc” is about to be born.

Director: Jay Anania
Cast: Olympia Dukakis, Martin Donovan, Carmen Chaplin, Alyssa Sutherland,
Judy Kuhn
USA / 2006 / 35 mm / 1h34

and a mysterious man, cross one day in New York. Najia is a young Palestinian
woman. Her curiosity and inquiring mind lead her to an older woman, a
doctor named Mary. By chance she meets a model named Shira in a coffee
shop. Singer Judy records old Celtic ballads at a studio, accompanied
by the pianist John Medeski. Meanwhile, a middle-aged man wanders about
the streets and parks of New York. He seems to be searching for a connection
to these women – a connection that will reveal the horror of the
world in which these women move and where they somehow seek their salvation.
Beautifully and hauntingly musical, this thriller also has a political
and personal intrigue that mounts inexorably as the sun begins to set
on this fateful day. By the time night has fallen in the city, the crossing
of these individual fates is sealed.

going on. Single Ruben is hardly even a protagonist of his own lonely
life, involving a mentally unstable sister and a ditzy niece, the sale
of illegal arms and cheap prostitutes, plus the monotonous routine of
being a bodyguard and the occasional humiliation from the Minister or
his family…Some jobs result in almost replacing a life for another.
Such pressure can ultimately explode. This is Ruben’s inevitable
outcome.

GAUCHE / DROITE
In the beginning Left / Right was just a question of placement
in the Constituting Assembly of 1789, created by the French Revolution.
Based
on this improvised seating arrangement, ideologies have confronted one
another for two centuries in the still-moving space of Western and Central
Europe. The last 30 years have been a theater of significant social and
political events in France, as in other countries: the rise of the extreme
right,
conflicts and movements beyond both unions and political parties, changes
in left-right ideologies, etc.
This collection, produced by the Franco-German TV channel ARTE at the end
of 90’s, aimed to use fiction to represent the French political landscape
of the last two decades through genre films. This look to the past will
perhaps help us better understand and analyze the new era of political
change fostered and represented by the recently-elected
French president.
Is this really a new vision for deep social change or a crazy race head-on
into the wall? The debate is open…
