Director: Volker Schlöndorff

Named after Sergey Eisenstein’s 1924 Stachka / Strike, about the story of workers during Czarist rule and inspired from Anna Walentynowicz, the overlooked hero of the creation of the Polish “Solidarnosc”, this is a solidarity saga set in Poland, based on historical events, that continues the politically engaged filmmaking of German master Volker Schloendorff. The film tells the story of Agnieszka, a small woman, but a loyal and dedicated worker. She is able to forge her way past the fat cats and masters, but eventually they get her and she is fired on a false pretence. Showing their solidarity, her colleagues strike in order to force her reinstatement. Suddenly the whole shipyard is striking, and then all Polish factories. “Solidarnosc” is about to be born.

GAUCHE / DROITE

In the beginning Left / Right was just a question of placement in the Constituting Assembly of 1789, created by the French Revolution. Based on this improvised seating arrangement, ideologies have confronted one another for two centuries in the still-moving space of Western and Central Europe. The last 30 years have been a theater of significant social and political events in France, as in other countries: the rise of the extreme right, conflicts and movements beyond both unions and political parties, changes in left-right ideologies, etc.
This collection, produced by the Franco-German TV channel ARTE at the end of 90’s, aimed to use fiction to represent the French political landscape of the last two decades through genre films. This look to the past will perhaps help us better understand and analyze the new era of political change fostered and represented by the recently-elected French president.
Is this really a new vision for deep social change or a crazy race head-on into the wall? The debate is open…
